Scotiabank’s Nuit Blanc

October 4, 2009 - 8:25 pm No Comments

One thing was for sure, it was bloody cold last night.. and of all nights in recent days, I didn’t equip the long-johns and decided to wear a k-way pullover instead of my goose.

Freezing cold.  Ugh

I originally had plans to attend quite a few different exhibits around the city, but when you realize how far apart each one is and have to decide on a few to visit at most.  So given that, my good friend Joe was already planning to head down there to check out his friend’s live project.. so I asked him if it was cool if I just tagged along.

We got down to the spot (Bloor and Landsdowne) and there was a few things going on that were interesting.. and me, a big fan of graffiti art was instantly drawn to some live graffiti work going on across the street

After watching them do their thing outside for a bit, we headed inside to see what was going on in there.  From when you see a 19+ sign on the door that warns you that some of the stuff you’re about to see may be offensive, you know you’re in for some different art

Just imagine some of your childhood toys, stripped of all their innocence and completely revamped to create the most offensive display of art.

Just the beginning ;)

And a very interesting collage of toys on the wall in the corner

And that concluded Funktion Gallery — aka one sadistic toys r us.  Across the street there was some more graffiti going on, with 3 artists all working on one piece

Wish I could have stayed or returned later in the night to see the final piece, cause it was looking real good.  And not too far from there, Joe’s buddy Joel Richardson and a few of his people were setting up their spot, and I was curious to see exactly how it was going to pan out

NuitBlanc09_25 NuitBlanc09_26

Basically he was taking people’s photos as they passed through, and then would print them out and place them on this wall.  After placing your face on the wall, he would draw his signature halo around your head and continue his montage.  By the time we left him the first time he had maybe no more than 10 people up, so I again am curious to see how this piece turns out.

We did go and check out The Distillery, and there was a good bunch of things going on over there.  So after a $30 parking ticket and a few ‘different’ performances, we decided it was time to just head home.

From sunset at 6:55 pm on Saturday, October 3, to sunrise on Sunday, October 4, 2009, Toronto’s playful overnight celebration of contemporary art once again takes over the streets for ONE NIGHT ONLY.

Almost ashamed to admit that I have never even heard of this event before, but am sure glad that somebody invited me to see their work for this year’s gig.  I even like how they have the option to download the ‘Night Navigator App’ for either your iPhone or Blackberry.  Link below:

ManifesTO: Chapter 3 The Show

September 19, 2009 - 8:05 am No Comments

Last night I went over to show my support and see some work from artists around the city that have donated their talents towards a silent auction.  It was a 19+ event, which I’m guessing was the case because they had juice (liquor) tickets, and a PWYC (Pay What You Can) jar as you walk in  to the place.. which I felt compelled to drop a $5, thanks to one of the witty security peoples outside who asked “What?  You don’t even have a toonie?”

The event took place in a home of some sort, and they artistically displayed works of art from various artists all throughout the house on all 3 floors.  The house was packed, with all different types of people who came out to either show love to those that created the art or the actual art itself.. but it was great to see such a great turnout for such great talent.  I started on Floor 2, where they had a very open concept and a lot of the art itself was plastered all over the walls

Ran into a few familiar faces that I haven’t seen for quite some time, all there for the same reasons.  Didn’t spend too too long on the second floor before heading downstairs to check out the real reason why I actually made the effort to come last night

Manifesto_05 Manifesto_06

Manifesto_07 Manifesto_08

The first floor (main floor when you walk in) had more individual pieces strategically placed about on the walls, all different types of mediums and subject matter.  The boxing painting was one of my favorite pieces that I came across, and the type of piece I would hang up in my hallway.

Manifesto_11 Manifesto_12

A lot of acrylic paintings (which was actually my favorite medium when I was doing art in high school) which quickly caught my attention, so I had to make sure I got a few snaps of those.  The top right photo was my most favorite piece in the whole place, just because I love that style of art with its bold colors and close cropping.  I can’t recall the artist’s name, but I think it started with D.. mad sick tho.

And then the real reason for me coming in the first was to see Louise’s work all done up for the show.  I randomly met Louise Harding earlier in the year and was instantly drawn to her work, just the way she mixes and blends all these different elements into each piece.  As you could clearly see, she was all shy and stuff (as most artists seem to be), but atleast I was able to catch her beside her creation.  Definitely expect to hear more about her in the near future, very very talented.

Inspiring is the best way to describe the event.  Makes you want to just create something worth sharing with other artists and art enthusiasts.

If you haven’t had a chance to check it out last night, but I do believe it’s going on all weekend, so make sure to get out there and show some love
